Charlie Sheen: Psychopath, or Mad Marketing Guru?

When asked, "Is Charlie Sheen a psychopath or a Mad Marketing Guru?" I would respond in the affirmative to both. They are not mutually exclusive. They may even be synergistic.

In fact, psychopathic and sociopathic behavior fascinates most people -- most of us have the same reaction when we are driving along, and pass a horrific, bloody automobile accident -- we just have to look. Rubbernecking. Morbid curiousity. Call it what you will.

Add to our fascination with psychopathy the extreme attention-grabbing powers of those possessed (amorality, dedication to purpose, socially inapropriate responses, greasy kid stuff in the hair, wild anger and fearlessness, just to name a few examples), they make natural announcers, leaders and self-promoters.

Charlie Sheen is not beloved. But he is newsworthy. Important. Trendy. Interesting. Maybe even a bit courageous.

What did Charlie do to garner all of this amazing media coverage? Here's the Mad Marketing Tactics list:

1) He bit the hand that fed him, with conviction and impunity;

2) He stuck to his guns (a figure of speech) and continued his rant, to anyone and anywhere;

3) He made it seem that he didn't care what anyone thought (people are pardoxically frightened by and attracted to people who just don't seem to give a damn -- especially if they are self-righteous;

4) He used exaggeration, repetition and a sprinkling of profanity to further stir the cauldron of controversy;

5) He made himself personal. He made his "fight" personal. He became a character bigger than life, as so many of us are merely petty actors or habitual liars, and relectant, cowardly conformists.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Charlie Sheen, psychopath and occasional actor, stepped out of TV character to become a giant character. And in so doing, he proved himself to be an inherent public relations genius. A true Natural, Charlie never even had to try. Wow.

Let's all think about this, and see what we can learn from it.
