Sex Sells In A Big Way: But Only When Presented (Insinuated) With Subtlety

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Sex sells - The trick is how to use it with tastefulness and subtlety. If it is too obvious, it narrows your "warm" prospective customers to a much narrower group of hard-core sexophiles [a Lingovation ]. Most of your broader audience (all of whom you'd like to get into the top of your marketing funnel) in the United States and in many other countries and cultures is often associated with shame when presented overtly or in the company of others.

Yes indeed. Sex sells. It is a driving force and has a constant presence in the minds of many a person. It carries with it an urgency, a call to action. It speaks to a deep-rooted need. It is an ethical neutral -- it ranges from what is regarded as pornography to what is acclaimed as art.

The sexual drive, or rather the fulfillment of it, is of itself a powerful addition to any call to action. If sexual innuendo, hinting, metaphor, tease, or hint is incorporated in the call to action -- the compulsion for a viewer or visitor to pick up the phone, or go to the website, or download the application, or do anything that brings him or her closer to purchasing instead of observing, the call to action will be stronger and more effective.

Remember -- you are not selling sex. You are using innuendo, guided metaphorical imagery (visualization), subliminal signals, certain words with multiple meanings which are artfully coupled with your actual product, service or other proposition in order to get your viewers aroused [without their necessarily knowing quite why, or even feeling sexually manipulated] by serving them up a heady cocktail of your product, service or other proposition, gently mixed with a massaged message of slightly prurient undercurrent in order to get them to get up, aroused, and to penetrate the barrier that separates them from plunging into a the heavenly meadow of "yes, yes, yes!"

In fact, all marketing, advertising, marketing and selling generally is analogous to a seduction of the prospective customer or client. The addition of subliminal sexual signals strengthens the "come hither" pull of the proposition.

Some wonderful articles follow (at the very bottom of this article post, titled related articles) which address the issue of the power of controlled sexual magnetism and gravity toward the ultimate consummation of a "yes, yes, yes" decision. Consumers, generally speaking, desire sex, and they also desire things that make them appealing to possible sexual partners.

Exaggerated, clumsy, tawdry direct sex doesn't usually work. Many people find it too excessive to be appealing; in fact, they find it discomforting. It is far better to catch the scent of a well-blended perfume or cologne on the breeze, or to see someone or something that is not intentionally provocative -- part of us wants to be able to imagine, more than to be suffused, in its imagery. The majority of your consumer audience (unless you're involved in something pornographic) want to be tantalized, mystified, hypnotized and gently persuaded -- and ironically, as in Lolita, they want something fresh and unspoiled, yet incredibly stimulating to the imagination.

Use the hint of sex and sensuality as a tool. As an means to an end. If you are too obvious and too deliberate, you'll turn the majority of your audience off.

Before incorporating any type of sexual or sensual imagery or suggestion in any advertising or selling campaign be certain that you are well advised by experts in neuromarketing, and subliminal messaging, lest you either overuse or misuse this power tool.

And it would do the marketers, promoters, advertisers and social media gurus out there in the cyber world that sex is an appetizer - it is not the main course. It is like a dance before dining.

As always, thank you for reading me, and for retweeting and sharing my articles with your colleagues, connections and friends through the use of social media -- a communication medium whose bandwidth continues to grow.

Getting Retweeted Every Single Time!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

To get your message across to as many people as possible, you need to turn the recipients of your information into "pushbutton evangelists." With Twitter, for example, the core value of your Twitter account is not actually just the number of followers (although advertisers will use that number as a metric to determine what they are willing to pay you to put their ads into your twitterstream and out to your audience) -- it is actually the rate of retweeting of your tweets by your readers or followers (Tweeps!), as third parties.

You want to maximize the probability of your being re-tweeted every single time you tweet.

The value in this is twofold:

1) Getting third-party objectivity into your tweets;

2) Multiplying by some great factor the number of ultimate recipients of your tweets through both your tweeting (to your followers), plus their retweeting (to their multiple groups of followers.

The simplest example:

You have a following of 1,000 people (Tweeps!) on Twitter. If each of them has 1,000 followers of his or her own, a retweet by any one of your followers to his or her followers adds an audience of an additional 1,000 recipients.

Going further and using the same numbers as above, if you have a retweet rate of , say 5%, this means that your tweet is going out to all of your followers (1,000 viewers), and is also going out (via retweet) to an additional 5,000 persons. In sum, your one tweet has gone to an audience of 6,000 persons even though your list only contains 1,000 followers.

TAKE AWAY: The greater your retweet rate, the greater your true ultimate audience. The key here is to maximize your retweet rate. Some of our friends from SocialMediAdd have some excellent tips to share.

A Clever One-Liner Wins Branding - Bam-O-Roma

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

In branding, slogans, mission statements, catchphrases and other critical components of marketing, messaging and memorability, nothing gets you as much respect (even from your detractors) and memorability as a witty rejoinder. In the recent Obama-Romney Presidential (yawn) debate, after Governor Romney remarked about how the U.S. Naval Fleet is at the smallest level that it's been since 1916, The President, without a moment's hesitation, dropped one of history's best one-liners...one of the snappiest rejoinders ever in an otherwise unsurprising exercise in political platform recycling. Ever reader of The Mad Marketing Tactics Blog should have jumped up off the couch (like Tom Cruise on Oprah) and said, "Douglas E Castle must have loved this!"

This is an aspect of humor applied to marketing (President Obama's making himself stand out) that can be used by anyone to boost his or her personal, professional or corporate brand.

Here's how it played out:

Monday night's final presidential debate didn't break any social-media records—but it did provide what many on Twitter felt was a delightfully ridiculous moment, and one worth retweeting and commenting about.

Total Twitter activity around the debate was the lowest of the three presidential debateswith 6.5 million tweets over the course of 90 minutes. (The first debate saw 10.3 million tweets, while the second saw 7.2 million.)

The most tweeted moment was President Barack Obama's retort to Romney's attack about the decreasing size of the U.S. military: "We also have fewer horses and bayonets," Obama said. [As an aside, this was worded so neatly and hilariously that it was an instant meme and a viral sensation]

The campaigns were paying attention: After the debate, the Romney campaign purchased the promoted tweet for the hashtag #horsesandbayonets while the Obama campaign purchased the promoted tweet around searches for "bayonets."

And why create a new meme when you can recycle the old? One of last week's joke debate accounts, @romneybinders, changed its handle to @horsesbayonette, thus preserving its existing follower count and staying on trend.
---------------

It doesn't matter whom you'd prefer to be the next president of the U.S., Obama had a Mad Marketing Tactics Blog "Branding Moment".

Here's a YouTube version of the video. Click on either the hyperlink or on the YouTube video player, which is sometimes shy about appearing...
