To get your message across to as many people as possible, you need to turn the recipients of your information into "pushbutton evangelists." With Twitter, for example, the core value of your Twitter account is not actually just the number of followers (although advertisers will use that number as a metric to determine what they are willing to pay you to put their ads into your twitterstream and out to your audience) -- it is actually the rate of retweeting of your tweets by your readers or followers (Tweeps!), as third parties.
You want to maximize the probability of your being re-tweeted every single time you tweet.
The value in this is twofold:
1) Getting third-party objectivity into your tweets;
2) Multiplying by some great factor the number of ultimate recipients of your tweets through both your tweeting (to your followers), plus their retweeting (to their multiple groups of followers.
The simplest example:
You have a following of 1,000 people (Tweeps!) on Twitter. If each of them has 1,000 followers of his or her own, a retweet by any one of your followers to his or her followers adds an audience of an additional 1,000 recipients.
Going further and using the same numbers as above, if you have a retweet rate of , say 5%, this means that your tweet is going out to all of your followers (1,000 viewers), and is also going out (via retweet) to an additional 5,000 persons. In sum, your one tweet has gone to an audience of 6,000 persons even though your list only contains 1,000 followers.
TAKE AWAY: The greater your retweet rate, the greater your true ultimate audience. The key here is to maximize your retweet rate. Some of our friends from SocialMediAdd have some excellent tips to share.
